Wrapping up the semester

Here are LOTS of things you need to be attending to as the semester wraps up. We’ll talk about these in class on 11/11.

END OF DAYS: MULTIMEDIA JOURNALISM

Here are the details of your projects, which have been on the class Web page since Day One. I’m going to go through and make some notes.
THERE ARE IMPORTANT DEADLINES IN ALL CAPS.

YOUR BLOG
Adding to your Blog
: …, starting Sept. 14, you will be expected to post to your blog twice a week or more. Posting to your blog is called “blog reporting” for purposes of grading – a total of 40 posts (twice a week for 10 weeks).
MOST OF YOU ARE DOING VERY POORLY IN THIS AREA. I DO NOT WANT ALL THESE POSTS MADE DURING THE LAST WEEK. HERE’S MY NEW RULE:
NO MORE THAN FIVE POSTS PER WEEK; THE LAST POST MUST BE MADE BEFORE DEC. 2.

Survey — Using SurveyMonkey.com, you will create a survey for your blog. You could gather data or see how much people know about your subject.
SOME OF YOU NEED TO DO THIS. DEADLINE: Nov. 13

RSS Feed – To add content to your blog, you will need to find a Web site or another blog that adds something to your topic AND provides an RSS feed.
SOME OF YOU NEED TO DO THIS. DEADLINE: Nov. 13

Create visuals NOT DOING THIS.

PODCAST:

This is a major project (100 points) that you will do with a partner. A podcast is an audio recording (it can also be video, but not for our purposes) that is posted online so that others can listen to it.
You and your partner will choose at least two people to interview in the journalism department ABOUT the journalism department.
LENGTH: 5-10 minutes
You will edit on Audacity (or your preference) and send me the file.
DEADLINE: By next Wednesday (11/18), you must have your interviews done. The edited piece is due during the Thanksgiving break, no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25. You’ll send it via Digital Dropbox.

SKYPE INTERVIEW:
50 points. You will need to locate someone who uses multimedia in a journalism job who is willing to be interviewed via Skype, a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet.

HERE ARE SOME PRELIMINARY DEADLINES FOR THE SKYPE INTERVIEW.

This project is fast-approaching and I won’t accept any late “papers” — that is, if you don’t get your interview done on Nov. 18 (2 weeks from Wednesday!), then you’ll lose 50 points.

DUE 11/4) Talk to your partner via e-mail or otherwise. If he/she is not cooperative, make the list by yourself. ONLY THREE TEAMS MET THIS DEADLINE. It is too late now. Be sure to meet the deadline for this Wednesday.

Someone in each of the partnerships for the Skype project needs to send me three names of people you think you might like to call. The list is due this Wednesday in class. Send it to me via e-mail, but have a copy in class to talk about.

DUE THE NEXT WEDNESDAY (11/11) In class, next Wednesday, you will need to tell me who has AGREED to do the call. You will also turn in a list of 20 questions, all relevant to the overall theme you expect to pursue with your interviewee.

** I’ll need the name, the topics you told your interviewee you will cover, and the phone number. I will call the person and be sure he/she understands what will happen and to be sure they have the equipment they need.

ASSIGNMENT MADE EASIER: You will NOT have to mess with Jing. If I figure out how to get a longer/better recorder and how to pay for it by then, I’ll do the recording for you. If not, there won’t be any. Also, you will not be required to find another video conferencing program like Skype. We’ll use Skype.

DUE WEDNESDAY AFTER NEXT (11/18) You’ll do your 10-minute calls in class.

Assigned partners for this project:

Aguayo Wilson
Cole Snowden
Dragic Wilson
Fulbright Ruiz
Griffin Smithson
Hediger McCann

FINAL PROJECT:

This project is also done with a partner and is worth 125 points. The goal is to create a multimedia presentation that will enhance the Lemke Ledger page written by students in Community Journalism last spring.
SoundSlides project length: 90-150 seconds.

PHOTO DEADLINE: No later than Wednesday, Nov. 18, your team needs to send me your photos for your final project. I will critique them and send you notes on them. You’ll send them through the Digital Dropbox. We’ll practice that in class.
This replaces the deadline for Nov. 11: Final Project Storyboard: Turn in log of all audio, turn in storyboard of edited aujdio with photos.

COMPLETED PROJECT DUE: Wednesday, Dec. 2, last day of class.

Photo-added sites due 10/14

For Oct. 14, you and your partner will present in class (and record on Jing or other recording software) a “photo-added” site that you find. Examples are Hallmark.com and JibJab.com. Try to find free ones, but if you want to sign up and pay to use it, you can.

For Wednesday Sept. 23

I’m going to try to compile each week all the assignments that are due, here on my blog so they are easy for you to remember.

For the 23rd:
Due Tuesday 9/22 by noon:

  • Find an RSS feed related to your blog topic and post it to your blog.
  • You will need to have at least two posts on your blog, one of them based on an interview with someone you identify and quote.
  • Find a podcast on iTunes or elsewhere that relates to your topic. Post it on MY page headlined: Podcasts
  • Post your final project ideas (Lemke Ledger) on MYpage headlined: Final Projects
  • In class on 9/23: You and your partner will present the photo/video storage sites you have found and you will also record them live using Jing (or another program if you wish if you are using your own computer).

Bring your camera and what you need to download pictures
    Find an RSS Parrots_JPEG

Posting to blogs due on Tuesdays

I’m going to need to change the rules on you: I’ll have to have anything that is posted to my blog or your blog due by noon Tuesday. Since we meet only once a week, it’s impossible for me to grade your work and get it to you by Wednesday unless we have this earlier deadline.

Don’t forget to take the survey

You find the link in the lower right hand corner of the page under Blogroll. Please complete the survey no later than Monday noon.

    Getting started with Multimedia Journalism

We’ll be using WordPress a lot in class. Notice above and at left, there are tabs that have links to three class pages: Welcome; What the course is about; and First Day. These will help you know what’s going on this first week.

Some of the assignments in the class will require you to post a comment to MY blog (what you are reading now). Some of your assignments will require that you create pages on YOUR blog.

I’ll try to be sure you understand which is which as we go along.
